![]() So various clan members set off to extract the ring from Ringo, by any means necessary. As it happens, a fan had mailed the ring to Ringo Starr. However, at the last moment the sacrifice has to be postponed as the intended victim is not wearing a required sacrificial ring. The premise is that an Eastern cult is about to sacrifice a young woman to the goddess Kali. However, I will try to give a brief summary. The plot of Help! is so silly that there is little point in recounting many details. Some of the wackiness in Help! can be traced directly to influences from The Goon Show. Martin had thus worked with both Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers on Goon Show records. Apparently the film was inspired in part by the absurd shenanigans from the Marx Brothers’ Duck Soup.īefore he became the Beatles’ producer, George Martin produced records for the cast of the BBC production The Goon Show. However, after John Lennon wrote the song Help!, the title of the film was changed. The original title for the film was Eight Arms To Hold You. It was filmed in color and shot in various locations, including Obertauern in the Austrian Alps and the Bahamas. However, because of the commercial success of the first Beatles film, Help! had a significantly larger working budget. Like The Beatles’ first picture, A Hard Day’s Night, it was directed by Richard Lester. Now we will shift to the movie Help! and eventually show the clip from that movie featuring the song Ticket To Ride. From L: Ringo Starr George Harrison Paul McCartney John Lennon. The Beatles also performed it live in their Shea Stadium concert and at the Hollywood Bowl.īelow is a photo of the Beatles in 1962, when they were recording a program for TV GRANADA. Released as a single in April 1965, Ticket To Ride was the Beatles’ seventh consecutive #1 hit in the U.K. In addition, the coda of the song ( “she ought to think twice, she ought to do right by me”) switches tempo and provides yet another change in style. Also, this was the first song where the Beatles adopted what became their standard practice of laying down the rhythm or backing tracks first, and then overdubbing vocals and lead guitar afterwards. Both the melody and lyrics are significantly more sophisticated than in the group’s first albums. Ticket To Ride continues the Beatles’ move towards progressively more complex and nuanced songs. While John maintained that he wrote the song more or less single-handedly, Paul’s contention is that the two of them composed the song together: he reckoned the contributions as about 60% John and 40% Paul. The song Ticket To Ride was one of the tunes written for the Beatles’ second feature film, Help! There is some disagreement about the authorship of the song. The Beatles, Ticket To Ride and the film Help! We will review their original song and discuss its inclusion in the movie Help! We will then discuss covers by Vanilla Fudge and by the Carpenters. This week’s blog entry is Ticket To Ride. ![]() I particularly love listening to Karen's drumming on these types of tracks.Hello there! This week we will resume our series Tim’s Cover Story Goes To The Movies, where we review a song that was featured in a film. But then I am more interested in the jazz they played in the 1960s, and a handful of deep cuts from their early Carpenters albums. Karen's voice is great no matter what, but the music became less interesting after their third or fourth album. Their later stuff became more and more bland. And I heard or read in an interview that Richard felt the same.įor me, the reason is that the music isn't so predictable. It is the best ballad/hit they ever produced. The original is simple, clean and clear, and the added electric guitar is unnecessary, it just adds noise, muddying it up.Īs great as Karen's voice is on so many of their hits, I believe they knocked it out of the park with TTR. Click to expand.I first listened to their initial album (Offering/Ticket To Ride) only about three months ago, and I loved about half the songs ( Invocation and Benediction, Someday, All I Can Do, Eve, Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing), but especially Ticket To Ride.Īnd I much prefer the original album version over the single or the the reworked version from the greatest hits album.
